Contact Form 7 is one of the best plugins out there for WordPress. It is in my core plugins set for each website I build. Although you can rock your contact forms with this plugin out of the box, you can extend the power and usage to help you become a powerhouse. The best part of all of these solutions is that they are free.
Database for Contact Form Submisions
One of the best add-ons to Contact Form 7 is the Contact Form 7 to Database Extension. This plugin grabs all of the submissions from all of your contact forms and sets it up in a table. You can then download the submissions in Microsoft Excel or transfer it online to Google Docs.
My favorite way to do it is to set up an automatic Google Spreadsheet that pulls in the database info. Using this, we were able to track how many submissions actually turned into a purchase and where we needed to improve along the route.
Tracking with Google Analytics
It’s important to know how your visitors are moving around on your site and see if they are working down your funnel. This is something that we can track with Google Analytics.
Just plop this code into the the additional settings area of your contact form.
There’s no need to actually have a thank-you.html page. This is just for a key tracker for Google Analytics. You can call it anything you like.
Special Mail Tags
There are some useful tags that help us to narrow down our contact forms. Luckily Contact Form 7 has a few that we can use. You can see the full list of these mail tags.
Here are a few useful tags:
- [_url] – This tag will be replaced by the URL of the contact form.
- [_post_name] – This tag will be replaced by the name (slug) of the post which contains the contact form.
- [_date] – This tag will be replaced by the date of the submission.
- [_post_author] – This tag will be replaced by the author name of the post which contains the contact form.
Semantic Contact Forms
Out of the box, Contact Forms 7 isn’t very semantic. There is a quick and easy way to bring it up to par. Thanks to Dan Johnson for posting a simple solution.
This is what Contact Form 7 starts with:
Your Name (required)

This is a great way to make it all semantic and accessible for all devices. It also makes it easier to style your forms.
